Suns head coach likely the fall guy after disastrous season

The Phoenix Suns have been eliminated from the 2024 NBA playoffs. They were swept in the first round by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Frank Vogel's position as the team's head coach has now come into question. He will likely lose his job due to his team's shortcomings.

"Sources tell me the Suns will consider a coaching change," Shams Charania said via FanDuel TV's "Run It Back." "...I'm told Kevin Durant had real issues with the offense, the way it was ran, him feeling like he was relegated to being in the corner."

Vogel is an NBA champion. He was supposed to steady the Suns as their big three became accustomed to playing alongside each other.

However, his offensive system often faltered, and he didn't have the necessary talent to produce a sturdy defense. Vogel's ability to contend at the highest levels was hamstrung by poor roster construction.

Nevertheless, the buck stops with the coach. Vogel had a team led by Kevin Durant, one of the greatest players in the history of the game. Devin Booker and Bradley Beal were his wingmen. It was clear Phoenix planned to win via an unstoppable offense.

In that sense, Vogel was never the right man for the job. You don't hire a coach known for favoring a defensive system to lead a superteam of elite offensive talent. It was a bad pairing from the jump.

The Suns front office has some tough decisions to make this summer. Vogel's position at the helm of their franchise will be front and center. If they choose to stick by their veteran head coach, they must give him a roster that is better suited to his system and style.

Otherwise, Phoenix needs to start searching for his replacement now. If not, that could be another haphazard decision that ends up costing the team a chance at a championship or potentially at keeping their star players around long-term.
