Timberwolves do something no Minnesota pro sports team has ever done

The Minnesota Timberwolves not only won their first playoff series in 20 years on Sunday night, but they accomplished something that no other pro sports franchise in the North Star State has ever done.

The Timberwolves' 122-116 road win against the sixth-seeded Phoenix Suns makes Minnesota the first team to advance to the conference semifinals. The third-seeded Timberwolves will face the winner of the first-round matchup between the second-seeded Denver Nuggets and seventh-seeded Los Angeles Lakers.

Denver leads that series 3-1.

Minnesota's sweep is their series win since 2004, when the Kevin Garnett-led squad advanced to the Western Conference Finals for the only time in franchise history. The Timberwolves have been to the postseason 12 times in their 35-year history, but were eliminated in the opening round seven straight years from 1997-2003 and then in 2018, 2022 and 2023.

While Phoenix had their "Big Three" of Bradley Beal, Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, Minnesota's trio of Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert had the upper hand.

Edwards was the clear difference-maker and came through time after time in Game 4, dropping a team-high 40 points.

Given the Timberwolves' struggles in previous postseasons, the Suns were a trendy upset pick prior to the start of the playoffs. Phoenix also swept Minnesota 3-0 in the regular season.
